My Contributions
This project showed me how essential research backed design truly is, from running user research end to end to sharpening my people skills while gathering data.
Participant Management
Recruited and scheduled local lawncare companies for interviews and observations.
Journey Maps & Personas
Helped build the maps and personas behind our recommendations.
Primary Research
Led interviews and on-site observations with local lawncare owners.
Project Management
Ran weekly stand-ups with our sponsor and kept the team on track.
THE PROBLEM

WalterPicks needed to engage users and be known
In the old WalterPicks app, there was no way for users to be social, whether this be sharing their picks outside the app, or building community within it. Additionally, screens were complicated
Our goal: identify areas where social features can be implemented and then ideate and design high-fidelity mockups for our research backed solution
THE SOLUTION

Screenshots worth sharing
We explored a lot of ideas, like live chats, profiles, and leaderboards. Shareable screenshots were chosen because of their feasibility and reach. When someone takes a screenshot, they get a clean card to send to a group chat or post online instead of the direct app UI, which can look messy out of context. Every share shows WalterPicks to someone who might not have heard of it.
The Screens
Simplified versions of the actual betting insights
Our Primary Users
the casual bettor
Bets for fun and wants things simple and low-risk.
the serious bettor
Takes bigger risks and wants more stats.
THE PROCESS

STEP 1
Understanding the
Problem Space
Researched the industry to understand how other betting apps function.
Finding: Two Areas for Opportunity: features that make the app more social for people already on it, and features that bring new people in.

STEP 2
Learning From Real Users
We interviewed sports bettors, grouped their answers into themes, mapped how the app works today, and built personas to better understand the user group.
Finding: The app felt like a solo experience, and people wanted community within it.

STEP 3
Sketching & Ideating
We rapidly ideated, turned the best ideas into rough wireframes on Figma, and then tested them with
real users.
Finding: Shareable screenshots had the most support from users and from WalterPicks. They were also the easiest to build, which mattered because of cost and feasibility limitations.

STEP 4
Design & Prototyping
We built the final screens on Figma, and then tested them with bettors.
Finding: People found them easy to follow and wanted to share them, but asked for minor aesthetic changes.
